Abstract

Trust may be the most difficult principle to tangibly capture in description but it is also a unique bond that holds a community together, particularly in the very toughest times. As noted in Churchill’s quote, it is the courage to speak and the courage to listen. This is most likely to occur in a context where one feels safe and supported in both rain and shine. That context has to be predictable, reliable, and reciprocal for all members of the community. When there is a strong presence of trust, then an organization will almost never lapse into chaos or disarray. Instead, when times are toughest, tightly connected groups tend to become more resilient, more egalitarian, and develop a greater bond that is built on mutual trust…
