Abstract

I think I will tackle this question in two aspects. The first has got to do with normal aspirations, I guess – and is readily understood in the context of Singapore with our emphasis on “doing well”. My choice was guided by my desire as a young person wishing to make a name for myself in my early 30s. More generally, there was the desire to express myself artistically through my choice of personal projects. After leaving my career in SPH, I had wanted to pursue independent documentary photography. Back in 2008, this still seemed like a viable option – magazines and newspapers then had budget for independent story ideas as opposed to commissioned story ideas. Basically, the plan was to pursue long-term projects, make sellable stories midway through, and pad all this with a few commissions from well-known magazines. This plan necessarily took me to interesting and sometimes “difficult” places. So in a way, the path was inevitable. Interesting stories and photos do indeed come from interesting places…
