Abstract

Dear David,I enjoyed talking to you last week on stock investment strategies. You didn’t think that a buy-and-hold strategy is very exciting. Frankly, neither do I. I noticed that you perked up when we switched to the subject of stock picking. If you recall, l said that while the buy-and-hold investor tries to get rid of firm-specific risk through diversification, the stock picker does the opposite. He deliberately bets on a few stocks that he identifies to be potential winners, stocks that he thinks will deliver a big windfall. Clearly, unlike the buy-and-hold investor, the stock picker doesn’t just want to perform on par with the index, he wants to beat the index.
