Abstract

The chairman of a listed company was reflecting on the boom years leading to the 2008 financial crisis. He regretted that he had failed to resist the pressure from institutional shareholders to increase the company’s debt and pay out more to those shareholders. This decision left the company dangerously exposed when the cost of credit increased. He did not think it was the right thing to do at the time. He just did not know how to resist. He felt he had failed in his stewardship…
