Systems Thinking as a Bedrock for System Integration

Abstract

Systems thinking is advocated as one of the fundamental elements to improve organizational performance. However, ensuring an integrated systems management approach in complex organizations, such as those in transportation and energy, is not a linear trajectory. Multiple factors such as financial constraints, technical system optimization, and knowledge diffusion are at play, hindering integration. Previous work has identified 10 patterns of system integration that lay out key issues hindering an integrated approach. This research tests these patterns in a Dutch consultancy firm in a three-hour workshop. In total, 13 consultants with expertise in different industrial sectors participated in the workshop. The results confirm the validity of the defined patterns for system integration and present concrete methods to tackle them. The added value of this study lies in the increased validity and generalizability of the 10 patterns of system integration and associated five lessons learned that facilitate a system thinking mindset.
