Abstract

This chapter investigates the challenges to self-archiving practices in academic institutions in South Africa and proposes a knowledge management (KM) strategy to enhance these practices. The research approach was primarily a conceptual overview, with elements of a review. The focus was on gaining a deep understanding of the subject matter through the exploration of key concepts while also incorporating reviews to support and validate the findings. The findings revealed that KM strategies, such as the integration of information technology, fostering a culture of sharing, leadership involvement, raising awareness, providing resources, creating incentives, and developing policies, can significantly enhance self-archiving practices in academic institutions. This study contributes to the literature by offering a strategic KM approach to address the challenges of self-archiving in South African academic institutions, providing practical solutions that may be applicable in similar contexts globally.
