Abstract

This chapter presents a case study of FANUC, a global machine tool manufacturer that set out to create a new numerical control (NC) market and succeeded in developing innovative NC technology and aggressively commercializing it. FANUC’s success story is one of multiple transitions in strategy achieved through major innovations in technology. This chapter offers a historical analysis and in-depth examination of the “FANUC innovation process” from the viewpoint of holistic strategic management. In particular, the chapter examines the company’s transitions in strategy from a framework of strategic innovation capability (SIC) as core theory and at the same time considers FANUC’s strategic management process through a shift from “closed innovation” to “open innovation” in implementing an IoT strategy in recent years. The chapter also discusses the role of a “triad system” supported by “holistic leadership” based on the sharing and resonance of corporate culture and values that create SIC mentioned above.
