Abstract

The global postal sector is at a crossroads as digital transformation and green initiatives converge, forming a twin transition that reshapes consumer behavior, business operations, and market conditions. This paper examines the sector’s evolution, highlighting successes in adapting to e-commerce demands and implementing sustainable practices while addressing missed opportunities in leveraging data, infrastructure, and expertise for environmental and social objectives. It emphasizes that digital transformation needs to be sustainable, and that green transformation relies on the scale and capabilities provided by digital technologies. The paper explores how postal operators can leverage their extensive networks and trusted brand to support national twin transition agendas and the need for policymakers to treat the postal network as a strategic asset and facilitate global collaboration. Key opportunities include greening e-commerce, promoting inclusivity, deploying digital public infrastructure, advancing circular economy practices, and contributing to local climate action. It concludes by identifying strategic areas for research and stressing the importance of cross-sector collaboration, enabling policies, and global cooperation for sustainable development.
