Abstract

This introductory chapter sets the stage for this volume. It begins with a brief survey of the growth of scholarship on the quantitative history of China. It then reviews the eleven remaining chapters, organizing them into four parts: War, Technology, and the Needham Puzzle; Rulers, Institutions and the Military; State Capacity, Fiscal and Financial Development; Religion and Agricultural Development. The chapter concludes with a call for further development of the quantitative history of China.
