Human-Centred Intelligence in Manufacturing Safety: From Observation to Smart Conversations

Abstract

Manufacturing safety management is evolving from traditional observation-based programs toward intelligent, participative systems that prioritise real-time learning and engagement. This chapter introduces the concept of human-centred intelligence, where data-driven insights are combined with structured safety conversations to enhance decision-making and risk control. Moving beyond compliance checklists, smart conversations enable workers and leaders to exchange contextual knowledge, uncover the “why” behind unsafe acts, and generate actionable improvements. A two-phase model is presented: the first establishes baseline performance through observation and lagging indicators, while the second integrates conversational analytics and leading indicators to drive proactive interventions. Using data from an Australian manufacturing case study, the chapter demonstrates measurable gains in trust, reporting behaviour, and injury reduction. The results show that embedding structured dialogue and feedback loops within digital safety management systems transforms reactive observation into a continuous-learning ecosystem. This integration of human interaction with intelligent monitoring tools provides a foundation for smarter, adaptive, and resilient manufacturing safety systems.
