SEM and the Analysis of Mexican Poverty Data

Abstract

The study focuses on poverty in Mexico - and the potential impact of a range of cultural and social indicators on the phenomenon. Three different levels of poverty (“feeding”, “capability” and “asset”) are considered in the analysis. Two datasets from the literature – for 2000 and 2010 respectively - form the basis of the structural equation modelling (SEM) results that follow. As the application shows, SEM provides a novel - and insightful - alternative to traditional regression methodology tried in the past.
