Abstract

Objective Quality of Life (QoL) is considered as a multidimensional concept involving a variety of domains (health-related, psychological, social and environmental), consisted both of objective and subjective components. Nonetheless, recent literature has restricted the semantic content of QoL to the subjective appraisal, stressing its individualized psychological attributes such as the personalized notion of happiness and life satisfaction. CASP scale conceptualizes QoL based on a psycho-sociological perspective, which draws upon the “Theory of Human Need”. The aim of this study is to evaluate the structure of the SHARE version of CASP scale (CASP-12) using factor analysis. Method A sample of 46,500 participants in Wave 8 (2021) of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement (SHARE) project, aged 50 years old and over and residing in Europe, was analysed. Confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency methods and polychoric correlations were used. Results Factor analysis results suggest a modified scale of CASP-12, with ten items instead of twelve, and three factors (Control, Self-Realization combined with Autonomy, and Pleasure) instead of four. Good overall fit and an adequate internal consistency were also obtained. Conclusion The modified version of the CASP-12 scale we suggest, presents sufficient psychometric properties and a well-fitting three factor structure in a large population sample of elderly in Europe.
