Abstract

This chapter addresses two contemporary issues: logistics challenges in e-commerce and the trends in logistics management. It begins with same-day delivery, a logistics challenge in e-commerce. Three logistics modes, including the use of third-party logistics service providers, crowd logistics networks, and in-house logistics, are discussed. China is now one of the top three markets in the world, and its e-commerce has been booming in recent years. Three common modes of operating e-commerce logistics networks in China are introduced: self-owned logistics networks, outsourced logistics networks, and information networks that pool logistics service providers together on a platform. In terms of trends in logistics management, this chapter explains how big data, cloud-based logistics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics and automation have facilitated the development of logistics operations. It concludes with a discussion of technology-driven applications, such as anticipatory logistics, omnichannel logistics, on-demand delivery, and blockchain in logistics.
