Abstract

This chapter aims to highlight the importance of cross-cultural literacy, which is directly associated with the costs of doing business. This chapter first reviews Hofstede’s six dimensions of culture in the workplace. These dimensions include power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence. Next, the chapter discusses cross-cultural leadership styles and the operations decisions most affected by cultural differences. To illustrate the significance of cross-cultural literacy, three applications are presented. The first is the integration of globalized and localized operations at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. The second focuses on effective cultural measures for addressing product adulteration. The final application examines Booking.com , an e-commerce accommodation booking platform that sets up call centers in major cities such as London and Tokyo and employs global talent to serve customers worldwide.
