AuctionBazaar.com®: Lubricating the NPA Disposal Process

Abstract

A group of MBA students had engaged with Ramachandra Rao, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Co-Founder of AuctionBazaar.com®, for a live project as part of their coursework. AuctionBazaar.com® was an online platform that helped lenders discover potential buyers and dispose of stressed assets. After an eight-week-long engagement, the students presented three proposals for Rao and his enterprise. The first proposal recommended utilizing extensive data available on AuctionBazaar.com®, such as bidder behavior, property trends, and other historical benchmarks, for various business decisions, including setting reserve prices for auctions. The second proposal focused on building a rating system to inform the bidders and owners of non-performing assets (NPAs), i.e., the lenders about the quality of assets, based on multiple factors, including the legal status and market value of the property. The third proposal advocated integrating the listings of AuctionBazaar.com® with other platforms (and vice versa). As an integrated platform that offered discovery, matching, and transaction utilities, they believed AuctionBazaar.com® could leverage cross-platform listing to gain a competitive advantage. While Rao appreciated the proposals, he also reflected on the specific capabilities he needed to build in AuctionBazaar.com® over the next few years.
