Abstract

Notions like sets, numbers and vectors with which this introductory chapter deals, among others, are fundamental both to mathematical (quantitative) representations of relations in economics and to mathematical notions. In the present chapter we not only summarise basic knowledge about natural numbers, integers, rational and real numbers but define also complex numbers as a particular case of vectors. They will make, among others, the derivation of important trigonometric formulas easier than usual. Vectors and sets, to be introduced in this chapter, form the basis of much that will follow.
