Abstract

Nursing costs are a significant portion of hospitals’ operating expenditures. This chapter discusses the challenges associated with choosing staffing levels and the pros and cons of hedging strategies, such as float pools and delayed bed assignments, for inpatient unit staffing. This chapter may be taught with the help of Eagle Health (B), a short case on inpatient unit staffing that comes with data and introduces students to common industry terms and managerial challenges.
