Abstract

More than 15 years ago, Cherwitz (2005) highlighted a problem that has since become even worse: public research universities face enormous challenges in the twenty-first century, namely, waning fiscal support, a loss of public confidence, and a persistent lack of diversity. In addition, they must serve society, which is—maybe—the most compelling challenge. While these statements were made in the North American context, they are probably also valid for Europe and other regions of the world as well. The time is ripe for increased university engagement, socially relevant research and learning, and cross-disciplinary forms of inquiry that require complex social issues. The problems of our time increase the urgency of this demand.
