Abstract

This chapter provides a chronological overview of monetary history from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, emphasizing pivotal institutional and technological developments. It explains how changes in monetary systems and policy challenges influenced the monetary thought of the authors analyzed in this book. Topics include coinage systems, bimetallism, the Commercial Revolution, the rise of credit instruments, such as bills of exchange, and the impact of precious metal flows during the Price Revolution. Additionally, this chapter discusses the emergence of central banking, the Financial Revolution, and the transition to the gold standard. By linking historical developments to theoretical debates, this chapter provides essential background knowledge for understanding later monetary theories.
