Abstract

This chapter summarizes the book’s taxonomy of monetary theories and identifies key lines of thought across history. It distinguishes between approaches focusing on store of value, medium of exchange, means of payment, and unit of account, linking them to contemporary debates. This chapter highlights the coexistence of metallist and nominalist traditions. It emphasizes that monetary theory reflects normative choices about the role of money in society. While acknowledging the limitations of classification, this chapter presents the taxonomy as a tool for understanding the diversity and continuity of monetary thought.
