Abstract

The term “social market economy” is inseparably linked with the reconstruction of the West German economy after the devastating destruction caused by World War II. It describes the economic system that brought about the so called economic miracle. Ludwig Erhard, Alfred Müller-Armack, Walter Eucken, Franz Böhm, Wilhelm Röpke and Alexander Rüstow are regarded as the scientific pioneers and responsible politicians of this successful model. Until now, the emergence of this concept has been attributed exclusively to a neoliberal basis, i.e., Keynesianism and welfare economics in the first third of the twentieth century and thus ultimately to Adam Smith. In this context, the ordoliberalism of the Freiburg School plays an important role as a catalyst.
