Abstract

Paul Barrett is the Chief Communications Officer for Davie Group, a privately held international shipbuilder with operations in Canada, Finland, and soon the United States. Davie Shipbuilding has been based in Québec, Canada since 1825, is a world-class designer and builder of highly specialized ships—particularly icebreakers for government and commercial customers. Davie became a partner in the Government of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy in 2023. This historic agreement is for the design and construction of the world’s biggest order of large and technologically advanced ice-going ships. The initial $8.5 billion work package includes seven heavy icebreakers and two large hybrid-powered ferries. Also in 2023, Davie acquired Finland’s Helsinki Shipyard, the world leader in icebreaker design and construction. In 2025, work will begin on the Polar Max icebreaker for Canada. Uniquely, this ship will be built between Davie’s facilities in Helsinki and Quebec. When delivered in 2030, Polar Max will be the most advanced, powerful and capable icebreaker ever delivered to a Western government.
