Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die indische Zivilisation blühte im Indus-Tal in Indien auf. In diesem Land hat die Mathematik eine sehr reiche Geschichte, die mindestens bis etwa 3000 v. Chr. zurückreicht. Die Tradition hat sich über Jahrhunderte fortgesetzt. Das Konzept der Null und ihre Transformation von einem einfachen Platzhalter zu einer eigenen Zahl legt nahe, dass der Subkontinent früh eine weit verbreitete, hochentwickelte mathematische Kultur besaß. Aus heutiger Perspektive hat das 20. Jahrhundert einen Boom in der Forschungsarbeit im Zusammenhang mit der Zahlentheorie ausgelöst. Einige der größten mathematischen Köpfe der Neuzeit haben an verschiedenen Problemen in diesem Fachbereich gearbeitet. In diesem Buch liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den Beiträgen indischer Zahlentheoretiker, die im 20. Jahrhundert dazu beigetragen haben, hervorragende Forschungsschulen in Indien zu entwickeln.
