Abstract

This chapter compares and contrasts the agricultural development in Bangladesh and West Bengal of India. We argue that farmers’ economic welfare is productivity, easy access to the credit market, insurance, knowledge, and crop diversity. We also contend that a healthy agricultural industry with efficient backward and forward linkages creates an efficient supply chain. This is the process that helps ensure a safe and reliable supply of inputs for them, such as irrigation, seeds, and fertilizers, and then generates a market for their products for the right price, improves energy security, and contributes to employment and economic development, traditionally in semi-urban and rural areas. We show that faster and more inclusive rural growth with job creation will require greater agricultural diversification and rural non-farm activities in Bangladesh and West Bengal.
