Abstract

This chapter discusses and summarizes prior research on the three keywords of catching up, chaebols, and production systems and then offers a framework for critically examining the amazing achievements of Hyundai Motor. Building up the conceptual blocks of catching up, forms of business organization, and automotive production systems, we provide a conceptualization of Hyundai Motor’s production system as an agile production system and its organizing principle as authoritarian experimentalism against Toyota’s lean production system based upon democratic experimentalism, with Hyundai Motor’s accommodating post-Chandlerian experimental and improvised practices in the process of car development through Chandlerian management resources since the late 1990s under a pre-Chandlerian control structure with no separation between ownership and management.
