Abstract

Unlike other South Asian economies, Chinese direct investment in India remained limited. However, a large number of Chinese firms have invested in India in the form of portfolio investment and it has been showing an increasing trend over the last couple of years. Along with investment, Sino-Indian trade is also growing at a remarkable rate. But a reverse development is noticed in the political and diplomatic front. There have been clashes reported from the borders in the recent time. In this background, this chapter outlines how these two nations have been successful in keeping economic interests and diplomatic associations separate from each other. The chapter analyses India’s growing apprehension for Chinese investment and India’s response to the same. Here, we will also attempt to underline India’s stand on China’s mega plan, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
