Abstract

The worsening climate crisis requires new, systemic solutions to go beyond the barriers of localized sustainability models. In this chapter, we will discuss how blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the deep relationship between the green economy and a decentralized society in which transparency, efficiency, and equity work in synergy to solve environmental problems. The DGEF represents a radical re-design of the three structural pillars that currently frame energy, urban, and mobility systems by synergizing the immutable ledgers offered by blockchain and the predictive powers of AI: (1) peer-to-peer renewable energy trading facilitated by decentralized grids, (2) AI-audited and blockchain-logged supply chains, and (3) tokenized carbon credits that enable liquid and thus fraud-resistant markets. The chapter leverages computer science, economics, and ecology insights to show how these technologies democratize environmental governance, align economic incentives with ecological outcomes, and advance community resilience. Yet, issues of blockchain’s energy usage, bias in algorithms, and digital divides should be addressed through ethical frameworks and inclusive policies. Based on case studies and theoretical synthesis, the work makes the case that blockchain and AI designed using participatory design can facilitate a just transition to sustainability that marries technological innovation with social equity and planetary boundaries.
