Abstract

This study examines the relationship between sustainable development and gender inequality. Sustainable development defines development that meets the needs of today without endangering the needs of future generations. In this process, the provision of equal opportunities between men and women is a fundamental component of social and economic development. Gender-based discrimination reduces the well-being and quality of life of individuals by causing different segments of society not to be treated equally. Sustainable development is a complex process with environmental, economic and social dimensions. Gender equality is both a goal and a critical prerequisite of sustainable development. It is emphasized that it is not possible to achieve sustainable development goals in a society where women and men do not have equal opportunities. Gender inequality creates negative effects on economic growth, social harmony and environmental sustainability, and this situation makes it difficult to achieve global development goals. The study addresses the economic, social and environmental dimensions of gender equality and focuses on the high economic costs created by gender inequality, social inequalities and environmental degradation. As a research method; qualitative research method was used and the effects of gender inequality on sustainable development were examined in depth through this method. In addition, suggestions for achieving gender equality were presented and studies showing the connection between gender inequality and sustainable development were evaluated with the existing literature review. In conclusion, achieving gender equality is a critical necessity not only in terms of human rights but also for the success of global development. Increasing the participation of women in education, employment and decision-making processes is considered an important step in achieving sustainable development.
