Domestic Violence Against Women: A Study Across Indian States

Abstract

Domestic violence (DV) occurs when a member of the victim's household commits a violent act. According to NFHS-5, 2019–2021, 29.3% of married Indian women among ages 18 and 49 have experienced domestic/sexual violence. The present study focuses on domestic violence (DV) against women across Indian states and union territories during 2000–01 to 2022–23. Relative position (RP) of different States and Union Territories (S and UTs) of India are determined and decadal growth had been compared across S and UTs. The major crime controlling factors turned out to be education, expenditure on police (PE) and conviction rate. Thus the present study suggests improvement in female education, PE, awareness generation regarding female rights, and better social support to reduce the prevalence of DV against women.
