The Glass Ceiling Phenomenon in the Turkish Financial Sector

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the existence of, the reasons behind, and the legal remedies for discrimination toward women in the Turkish financial system. There are some studies and organizations in this area in which there is a need, especially for emerging and developing countries such as Türkiye, where gender inequality is difficult to overcome. Nevertheless, the presence, capabilities, and strengths of women in finance are increasingly being acknowledged and discussed. Therefore, the main contribution of this study is to support the elimination of the gender gap in finance in emerging and developing countries such as Türkiye. The findings indicate that the representation of women in senior positions in the financial sector at major corporations has become a standard organizational goal. Another crucial aspect in this sector is inclusivity. It is of the utmost importance that senior management, regardless of their gender, take action to ensure gender equality within the organization. However, it is insufficient to address gender equality only in the context of the workforce. It is equally important that women have equal access to financial services as men, both as customers and in terms of the rights and conditions to which they are entitled.
