Abstract

The lack of support systems and the absence of education which helps women to live life as single mothers has caused anguish and pain for many. As these women plod through life, they learn, through trial and error, on how best to balance their lives as primary caregivers, main breadwinners, and career women. Single mothers have to contend with various social stigmas, financial hardships as well as workplace inequalities. This chapter investigates the resilience and challenges of single motherhood. It focusses on the emotional, social, and economic implications caused by the phenomenon. It also explores the changing family structures influenced by patriarchal legacies and societal expectations, and their effects on the psychological and developmental wellbeing of single mothers and their children. It then links the role of community support, government policies, and organizational interventions in empowering single mothers as a way of achieving economic stability and a higher quality of life. The resilience of single mothers is the manifestation of female strength and power which should be harnessed by the societies, communities, and country as it aims to prosper and be a progressive example to others.
