Abstract

What you will learn in this chapter The long-term growth of a company depends on employees who possess the requisite skills and abilities to contribute to its strategies and goals. In other words, human resource development (HRD) can be regarded as a crucial factor that determines the future of a company. Traditionally, Japanese companies were renowned for their high-performance HRD system. Therefore, it would be advantageous to study HRD systems through the lens of the Japanese case study. This chapter seeks to clarify following four key points: (1) what HRD is and how it functions in Japanese companies; (2) the Japanese distinctive training and development methods; (3) the feature and ownership of Japanese career development; and (4) the changes occurring in Japanese HRD at both the organizational and individual levels and the challenges for the future of HRD
