Abstract

What you will learn in this chapter In this chapter, you will explore the essential concept of motivation and its pivotal role in both personal and professional settings. The chapter begins by explaining why motivation is crucial, illustrating how enjoyment and interest can enhance engagement and productivity. Key theories of motivation, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Alderfer’s ERG Theory, are introduced to explain how different levels of human needs drive motivation. This chapter also covers Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene (also known as Two-Factor Theory), which distinguishes between factors that lead to job satisfaction and those that cause dissatisfaction, offering insights into how these elements influence employee motivation. McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y are presented as contrasting views on human behavior in the workplace, highlighting their implications for management practices. Furthermore, this chapter turns to cognitive approaches to motivation, such as Expectancy Theory, which explains how individuals’ expectations of outcomes influence their motivation. It also examines the impact of job design and goal setting on enhancing motivation, emphasizing the importance of creating motivating work environments.
