Abstract

Rise of space tourism has transported the idea of orbital hotels, or “floating sanctuaries,” from science fiction to real life innovation. The subsequent chapters of this book chapter discuss multidisciplinary challenges associated with the design of spacecraft hotels with a focus on technical challenges such as artificial gravity generation, radiation shielding, and closed-loop life support systems. Its design strategies for human-centric design to promote comfort in zero-gravity environments involve spatial orientation techniques, modular interiors, and advanced material science. Operational viability centres on safety protocols and sustainability practices, such as waste-to-resource technologies, and emergency escape systems. Drawing upon literature in this domain, the chapter identifies the lack of luxury-utility trade-offs studies and a dearth of research on changes in long-term guest behaviors. Additionally, sections outline the need for the phased implementation of change through stakeholder cooperation. Orbital hotels are positioned as tourist destinations and prototypes for interplanetary habitation, emphasizing their potential to enhance sustainable living in outer space.
