Abstract

Empirical studies conducted in different parts of the world mostly support the conclusion that there is a statistically positive relationship between the level of education and income. However, they differ significantly in how such a relation is explained. In the 1960s and 1970s, the human capital theory and the screening hypothesis, which had attracted the attention of scholars and politicians worldwide, provided explanations that seemed to conflict with each other.
