A Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis on the Future Directions of Environmental Sustainability and Green Finance

Abstract

This paper aims to critically discuss the intersection between environmental sustainability and green finance through systematic review and bibliometric analysis. The study objectives are to address these gaps with the help of analysis of other sources containing bibliographic records, having considered 386 papers in the Scopus database. The results based on quantitative data show that it has been rapidly developing during the last 6 years, as more than 96% of the identified articles belong to the period from 2017 to 2024. Among all the countries, China, India, and Indonesia can be considered leaders by the number of publications in the field of environmental sustainability and green finance. The existent paper distribution across journals is that “Resources Policy” is the most influential journal in this field that contributes 20% of the papers about environmental sustainability and green finance with 77 papers followed by “Sustainability (Switzerland)” with 33 articles, “Energy Economics” with 25 articles, and finally “Journal of Cleaner Production” with 20 articles. Al-Faryan, M. A. S is the most productive author with 5 contributions to the journal while authors Ibrahim, R. L. and Lin, J. H have contributed 4 articles to the journal. This paper is a good contribution to the literature on environmental sustainability and green finance since co-occurrence word analysis shows that the important fields of interest are “green finance,” “fintech,” “sustainable development,” “green innovation,” “natural resources,” “climate change,” “green bonds,” and “sustainable finance.” This paper aims to add to the growing knowledge about environmental sustainability and specifically green finance.
