Abstract

This chapter focuses on industry practitioners, recognising that leadership is more than just theory and that the interdependence between theory and practice can lead to the best outcomes for individuals and their organisations. Leadership practice is the key to organisational success and is the cornerstone for understanding how leaders use their skills and expertise to not only implement leadership theory, but to also inform its development. It is an iterative journey of how best leadership theory can be applied to achieve the outcomes necessary in a complex and ever-changing world. We recognise in this chapter that leadership is a context driven reality where organisations within the disability and mental health service sector need to respond to wide-ranging environmental issues and a myriad or stakeholders that, together, must be understood and interpreted to support the innovative solutions to problems that are constantly attempting to address the existential issues that regularly challenge these organisations. This chapter highlights the interviews we have conducted with seven highly influential and experienced CEOs from across Australian nonprofit disability and mental health service providers. It outlines the key leadership themes that have been identified and does so in the context of highlighting the importance of industry practice and the learnings that can be gleaned from their individual expertise and their combined industry knowledge.
