Abstract

In this chapter, we provide an overview of leadership and do so in the context of the Australian nonprofit disability and mental health services sector (“NDMHSS”), where leadership is practised within a purpose, mission, and values-based context. This context is important as it underpins a range of leadership attributes which, from the focus of our book, considers leadership through the lens of the disability and mental health nonprofit sector. In doing so, we also look forward in considering the future direction of leadership in the broader nonprofit sector where opportunities exist for adding to both academic and practitioner knowledge in this crucial space. Input from a wide range of academics and practitioners consider issues associated with personal leadership attributes, organisational leadership attributes, as well as industry leadership characteristics, each of which has been identified as themes for detailed analysis. Within each theme, a range of unique topics identify key issues that cover a complex range of leadership challenges that must be addressed for organisations in this sector to achieve sustainability and hence ensure continuity of service provision to their clients. Supporting this is analysis of in-depth conversations with Chief Executive Officers from some of the largest service providers in Australia, providing insights into how these challenges are being addressed in practice.
