Abstract

Building operations include the day-to-day use and management of buildings and the various systems within them. Improving energy efficiency is an obvious step. Building electrification when coupled with renewable energy tariffs is a further significant step towards decarbonising building operations. Other steps that can be taken include retrofitting cooling systems and switching to low-GWP refrigerants, leak monitors, safe destruction of old refrigerants, improving building envelopes and façade audits and sustainable interior renovations. Renovation materials are embodied carbon, tenants fit outs occur during the operating stage of the building life. Sustainable fit out guides, water conservation and energy audits can all be part of a green lease agreement to establish building wide sustainability actions for both landlord and tenant.
