Abstract

Chapter 3 presents the analysis of characteristic facts and discusses the growing role of green trade barriers, which aim to promote sustainable environmental practices and protect ecological systems. These barriers, including technical trade barriers, import licensing, and quantitative restrictions, target harmful production methods and encourage greener alternatives. A review of WTO data from 2009-2021 reveals an increasing trend in environmental-related notifications (ERNs) and measures (ERMs), indicating stronger integration of environmental goals in global trade policies. For China, the primary green trade barriers come from developed countries like the EU and the US, focusing on energy efficiency, pollution control, and renewable energy. The impact of these barriers spans various sectors, especially manufacturing industries like chemicals, electronics, and textiles. Additionally, the correlation between various pollutant emissions in China, such as sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand, highlights the interconnected nature of environmental pollution, supporting the focus on representative pollutants for effective policy analysis.
