Abstract

This book chapter has investigated the circular economy from a number of different perspectives. It first examines the circular economy in terms of its origins and definitions, its benefits in relation to economic, environmental and social dimensions and its relevance to the United Nation’s sustainable development goals. After setting the background it delves into the topics of the landscape of circular economy in relation to policies with particular emphasis to the Asia–Pacific region, the role of industry 4.0 technologies in promoting circularity, circular economy applications in industry, implementation challenges, and the types of circular economy performance indicators including progress of circular economy policies across the Asia–Pacific region. Additionally, it has recommended policy implications both for the business and the government for the implementation of circular economy including informing on the next frontier of circular economy development for the Asia–Pacific region.
