Abstract

Chapter 3 is the first analytical chapter of the book. It examines patterns and variations in youth unemployment rates. The chapter then introduces the first assumption of the Law of One Unemployment Rate (LOUR), which posits the “uniformity” of unemployment patterns across demographic groups. To contextualise this assumption, the chapter presents a literature review that summarises major empirical findings on youth unemployment rates and highlights both consistencies and divergences reported in previous studies. It then details the methodology of this study and specifies the data sources and research design used for the empirical analysis of LOUR’s first assumption. The chapter concludes by synthesising the evidence on the uniformity of unemployment rates.
