Abstract

1. A Deliberate Move from Instinct to Structure Following SOBOCE’s consolidation, Samuel Doria Medina began transitioning from a reactive, intuition-based management style to a more deliberate and structured strategic approach. 2. Creating an Institutional Foundation SDM focused on formalising systems, clarifying roles, and strengthening middle management. This shift marked a growing awareness that personal oversight needed to give way to institutional resilience for sustainable growth. 3. Focus and Vertical Integration SOBOCE concentrated on its core business—cement—while pursuing vertical integration strategies in aggregates and distribution. This narrowed the scope of operations but deepened control, enhancing efficiency and margins. 4. Professionalism Without Bureaucracy A key challenge was maintaining entrepreneurial agility while embedding formal structures. SDM sought a balance—encouraging process discipline without stifling initiative or creating administrative inertia. SDM’s leadership matured from directive involvement to strategic oversight, trusting professional teams to manage day-to-day operations. 5. Towards a Theory of the Business The accumulation of experience led to the emergence of a clearer, more codified strategic logic. What had begun as intuitive responses in a crisis now crystallised into a broader “theory of the business” that could guide future decisions and expansions.
