Abstract

M. V. Nadkarni’s contributions to the Economics of Well-Being integrate economic growth, social justice, ethical governance, and environmental sustainability. His scholarship extends beyond traditional economic frameworks, emphasizing human-centric development rooted in equity, dignity of labor, and decentralized democracy. Nadkarni’s work in agricultural economics, rural livelihoods, and environmental ethics reflects his commitment to sustainable and inclusive economic policies. He was deeply influenced by Gandhian principles, advocating for trusteeship, self-sufficiency, and moral responsibility in economic systems. His research highlights the interconnection between economic policies and ethical considerations, particularly in poverty alleviation, farmer empowerment, and ecological conservation. His comparative studies of global economic models emphasize the need for an Indian approach to development that prioritizes social well-being over material wealth accumulation. Through his extensive writings, including books like “Decentralised Democracy in India” and “The Bhagavad Gita for the Modern Reader,” he provided a holistic perspective on economic transformation. His insights remain crucial in addressing contemporary economic challenges, particularly in an era of globalization, inequality, and climate change.
