Abstract
This chapter explores the foundational role of logistics and operational management in shaping the competitive landscape of the global airline industry. As the strategic backbone of airline operations, logistics involves a multifaceted coordination of services including ground handling, aircraft turnaround, fleet deployment, route scheduling, cargo logistics, and fuel optimization. Operational management, on the other hand, deals with the continuous execution of core activities such as flight dispatch, crew rostering, safety oversight, aircraft maintenance, and customer service delivery. Together, these domains form an integrated framework that ensures timely, safe, and cost-efficient air transportation (Wensveen, 2023). A systems-based approach is employed to examine how digital transformation is redefining airline logistics and operations. Technological enablers such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), predictive analytics, and blockchain are increasingly being adopted to streamline decision-making and optimize resources in real time (Sahib & Padwal, 2022). Central to this transformation is the Airline Operations Control Center (AOCC), which serves as the nerve hub for integrated operational management. The chapter also evaluates how these innovations are addressing complex challenges including weather disruptions, global supply chain constraints, environmental mandates, and multimodal transport integration (Doganis, 2019; International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO], 2023). To provide practical context, this chapter draws on a range of post-COVID-19 case studies and industry best practices that demonstrate successful adaptation in the face of volatility. Airlines have implemented lean management techniques and resilience strategies to cope with uncertain demand, labor shortages, and heightened regulatory scrutiny (International Air Transport Association [IATA], 2023). By examining key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time performance, load factor, and cost per available seat kilometer (CASK), the chapter illustrates how performance-driven logistics can enhance both service delivery and operational sustainability in the long run (Wensveen, 2023). Ultimately, this chapter positions airline logistics and operations as essential pillars for achieving digital maturity, sustainability goals, and strategic alignment in global aviation. By linking operational strategies to broader trends in customer-centric service design, environmental accountability, and compliance with international regulatory frameworks, this chapter provides students, academics, and practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the innovations and competencies required to lead in the evolving field of airline management.
