Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the literature streams relevant to the constructs of work-life balance and work-life harmony, and to explore the current approaches in measuring the efficacy of work-life initiatives in organizations. Conceptual differences between work-life balance and work-life harmony were found and based on knowledge gaps identified within the literature, a cognitive dissonance approach to quantify the differences was proposed. Second, the review indicates there is a lack of evidence demonstrating the strategic value of work-life initiatives in organizations. Hence, an approach adopting creative work performance as a measure of the efficacy of work-life initiatives is suggested. Implications addressing these research gaps are discussed.
