Abstract

The arrival of the twentieth century seemed to many to be very auspicious. So much had been transformed over the past century that the human world, at least in the rapidly growing rich corner of it, would have been almost unrecognisable if someone from 1800 had been suddenly transported to 1900. The data on per capita GDPGDP per capita, total GDP and sharesShares of world GDPGross Domestic Product (GDP) by major global regions show a strong “Great Divergence” between the industrialising core nations (mainly Europe and its offshoots, as well as Japan) and the rest of the world. Within that core was rapidly growing scientific and industrial growth accompanied by increasing inequality and social and political unrest. Across the whole world there was the creation of a truly integrated global economy and modern financial system, with mixed blessings depending on where one was situated.
