Abstract

This chapter discusses a range of creative thinking tools, and presents how these can be used as ‘prompts’ or strategies to enable, enhance and encourage convergent and divergent thinking that are the hallmarks of creativity and the creative process. The chapter starts by briefly explaining the role of perception in creative thinking. This includes how to develop our ability to think creatively by practicing how to employ ambiguity and contradiction as a part of our thinking. The chapter then discusses a selection of creative thinking prompts, including: asking questions, analogy, assumption surfacing and provocation, attribute listing, brainstorming, the 6 thinking hats, forced connections, lateral thinking, mindmapping, PMI (plus, minus and interesting), reversal and SCAMPER. We explain how these prompts can be used and how they might be beneficial in the generation or refinement of ideas or problem-solving.
