Abstract

Diabetes is one of the major causes of morbidity globally with over 371 million people worldwide and more than 80% of morbidity and mortality occurring in the low- and middle-income countries including Nigeria, which has the highest burden of diabetes in Africa. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is on the increase in the sub-Sahara region due to poor nutrition therapy knowledge leading to a reduced life expectancy and reduce quality of life which has affected the healthcare sector and economy in Nigeria. Hence, the paper aims to explore the current status of diabetes care and management, effect of physical activity, diet, and lifestyle, areas of improvement, and strategies to optimize using secondary data to accelerate the sustainable use of resources and economic burden of diabetes and the use of technology in its management. The review has shown that high cost is incurred at various stages of screening, diagnosis, monitoring, and management of diabetes; hence, it is important to implement cost-effective measures for diabetes care. Improved quality of care and treatment-to-target is recommended to reduce diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. There healthcare system should be restructured so that it can be more accessible to patients and government must provide an alternative of healthcare financing for the citizens.
