Management Transformation and System Building in Line with International Standards

Abstract

The earliest management theory in China can be traced back to The Art of War by Sun Tzu of over 2000 years ago which explains the core elements of management in a systematic way. If we translate Sun Tzu’s military thought into modern corporate management, then Tao can be understood as the company’s vision and mission. “Success comes to those who share in one purpose” can be interpreted as “if the top leadership can establish a common vision espoused by all employees, a tremendous synergy will be formed”. “Heaven” can be interpreted as the external environment. “Timing” is related to the intensity of market competition and boom-and-bust conditions. “Earth” can be interpreted as the evaluation of the strength and threats of the enterprise in the competitive environment, as well as the strategic choice and positioning based on the analysis of the competitive strategy. “General” represents the enterprise’s management. According to Sun Tzu, the general’s selection criteria in descending order are wisdom, integrity, benevolence, courage, and rigor; wisdom and integrity are considered the two most important qualities. The “law” stands for organizational management, such as organizational structure, incentives, logistics and supply chain systems. One can only win the war if one has a thorough understanding of these five elements.
